2013-2014: Avalanche deaths this winter (2013-14) started slowly likely due to the extremely dry conditions in California, Oregon and Washington. No avalanche deaths occurred in October or November. Three deaths occurred in both December and January. However, in an average winter a total of 12 deaths have typically occured by the end of January. Big storms in February across the west resulted in numerous accidents and deaths. By the end of February another 12 deaths had ocurred. The first two weeks of March saw another 5 deaths, which is average for an entire March.
